Treasure Island

Seeker Gray has, as they say, Had Words with me. He thinks I’m too cerebral and/or spiritual in my reviews. “Go have fun someplace,” he urged me.

“Have fun?” I repeated blankly.

“Fun,” he said sternly.

So that’s how I came to find myself on Treasure Island … for what, after all could be more fun than pirates?

Now, it has to be said, I actually have a little history with pirates. Not the movie type (though who, it has to be asked, can truly resist Johnny Depp?); the real thing. Years ago, one of my clients was a corporation that located and dived shipwrecks; I was responsible for doing research that might yield sites for exploration, reading old “ships sighted” logs and so on. And of course there was my ongoing interest in (infatuation with?) Peter Easton, Newfoundland pirate, whose cache is still to be found …

Get a grip, Sherpa. This is supposed to be fun, not a lecture.

Alors. On this island, I first teleported to an arena, up a forbidding staircase …

… where, apparently, swordfights take place.

Apparently there are tournaments here, as I saw on the notecard (which should, by the way, note the spelling of tournament, though it’s clear from the international flavor of the note that English is not this person’s weapon of choice):

Sword Tourneaments Charter.

The first and only group for swords, blades, melee weapons lovers. Planning events on the best arenas in SL, sharing big prizes and $. We fight for fun, don’t like hierarchies, act on the side of roleplay. Respect each other and support fair game with combat meters and scripted melee weapons. We don’t admit fireweapons, cages, magic etc.

Onward … It was high time, I thought, to see some pirate ships. And so I did …

(Well, why just look when one can actually be aboard?)

It’s not fantastic to assume, either. Pirate ships were the most egalitarian societies of their time: women and slaves served as crew and were equal to anybody else in their eyes, and loot was divided fairly. It was illegal, of course, but hardly any more immoral than a great many other things going on at that time (or, sadly, in our own time).

There are a great many ships here to explore, along with the occasional pirate encampment …

… and other structures whose use, quite frankly, baffled me …

It’s one thing to flit about the shoreline, but heading inland gives one a completely different experience of the island. Bunnies hop by, deer graze peacefully, and … oh, dear, that was a rat, wasn’t it? And …. that howling …

Wolves. There are wolves. Set your world to night and listen to them then, I dare you!

There are also a few other obstacles, such as the lovely waterfall and stream, the latter of which Sherpa fell oh-so-gracefully into …

treasurestream.jpg

Well, that was fun. If you see Seeker, tell him so, will you?

Anyway, do make it a point to visit Treasure Island. You may even have fun, too!

Can I go back to my cerebral pursuits now? Please?
